In the incident that took place in Yozgat, a 4-year-old boy swallowed a bead magnet. Neodymium magnets, popularly known as ‘ball magnets’ or ‘bead magnets’, can cause very dangerous consequences for children as they resemble candy with their colorful structures.
10 TIMES STRONGER THAN NORMAL MAGNETS
Yozgat City Hospital Pediatric Surgeon Op. Dr. Serkan Odabaşı said, “These magnets can have 5-10 times more attraction power than normal magnets. These magnets, sold for play purposes, attract children’s attention with their various colors and bright structure and can be swallowed by children.
Strong attraction power; It also allows them to find each other in organs such as the stomach and intestines. Problems such as gangrene in the large intestine tissue, perforation, and formation of paths between organs may occur between magnets.
13 MAGNETS CAME OUT OF HIS INTESTINE
Our patient, who applied to our hospital, complained of swallowing this magnet. After determining that there was no displacement on the radiographs, we decided to take our patient into surgery. We identified the location of this magnet through closed surgery, and since there was damage to the relevant 3-4 centimeters of intestine, we completed the operation by removing this part of the intestine. We removed 13 colored magnets during the operation. He said, “I wish our patient and his family a speedy recovery.”
Yozgat City Hospital Chief Physician Specialist. Dr. Mustafa Kozan said, “Our Pediatric Surgery Specialist, who started working approximately 2 months ago, performs successful surgeries. I congratulate him and his team. As our doctor stated, unfortunately, we encounter such cases as a result of neodymium magnets attracting attention with their colorful structure. “I invite parents and families to be more careful about this issue,” he said.
