Dozens of birds, including rare species, are bought and sold in the “bird market”, which has become the meeting point of bird enthusiasts in the historical city of Umdurman in Sudan.
Sudanese people come to the market, which was established more than half a century ago, to see and buy birds imported from different parts of the world, especially from Australia.
In the Umdurman bazaar, at the intersection of Anagarib and El Adeni streets, various birds in dozens of cages of various sizes are waiting for their new owners.
The name of the biggest bird market in Sudan changed from “pigeon market” to bird market with the increase in the diversity in the market after young people became interested in different bird species for hobby purposes in the early 90s.
Domestic and foreign species such as canaries, parrots and pigeons can find buyers from 200 to 600 liras in the market.
The market, where there are dozens of varieties such as love bird (paradise parrot), budgerigar, small green bee bird, Macaw parrot, is especially popular with young people.
