After three parts, the Bourne series around Matt Damon as a secret agent with amnesia was initially considered over. Every successful Hollywood franchise is though only completed until suddenly another part is announced. The action series starring Damon continued after The Bourne Ultimatum in 2012, albeit with a new lead actor.
In The Bourne Legacy, Jeremy Renner, best known as Hawkeye from the Marvel cinematic universe, plays the Matt Damon successor. The changed Bourne franchise with the MCU actor was quickly buried again.

Jeremy Renner plays Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy like Jason Bourne, participated in the CIA’s Operation Outcome program Has. As a super soldier, he also wants to explore his past with the help of the scientist Stephanie Snyder (Rachel Weisz). But the CIA agent Byer (Edward Norton) is already hot on his heels to cover up the traces of the secret program.

Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote the previous three Bourne films, directed the fourth installment in the series entirely without Matt Damon’s character. At the box office, The Bourne Legacy became one mild successwhich box office mojo reports has grossed over $270 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million.
Then, in 2013, a new Bourne film was announced, which would star Jeremy Renner first as Aaron Cross. However, plans became increasingly vague and the studio also wanted to bring back director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon as an established star. In the end, a fifth Bourne film prevailedwhich was released in 2016 under the simple title Jason Bourne from Greengrass with Damon.
The Bourne universe starring Jeremy Renner has not been mentioned since. Even initial crossover plans with Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross have probably been dropped forever. This puts this action universe within the Bourne series buried again after just one film.
