The action film with the most ingenious film title of the year is now in cinemas – and it has a completely absurd story

The action film with the most ingenious film title of

There are silly titles and funny titles and there are tarps. That’s the name of the new film starring Scottish action grumpy Gerard Butler and Mike “Luke Cage” Colter. Just tarpaulin. Airplane.

Non-Fatal Crimes: Plan.

Or Rise of the Plane.

Neither is Plane (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Gerard Butler).

In short: tarpaulin.

The title lacks a deeper meaning and still means everything that is relevant: Gerard Butler flies on an airplane. Complications arise. This results in gunfights and explosions.

Plane is a film title of impressive reduction, which in its numb sobriety feels like the knuckles of a fist striking a jaw. In short, Plane is already about one of the best movie titles of the year. You can discover whether the film keeps what the title promises in German cinemas starting this week.

What is the action movie starring Gerard Butler about?

While the title charms with minimalism, the story sounds like someone has I-pack-my-bag with the screenwriting software played. The sequence of improbable events reads so absurdly:

Commercial pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler), who has a classic action movie name, has his plane struck by lightning in a storm. Although the machine is badly damaged, he is able to land it safely. However, he has no choice but to have one Head for an island known for the war raging there.

The risky rescue of his passengers is also their undoing: Shortly thereafter, most of the people on the plane are taken hostage by a group of dangerous rebels. To free her, Torrance can only count on the help of Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter). However, it was as FBI prisoner on board because he is accused of aggravated murder. Inevitably, the two men learn more from each other when they join forces than they initially thought.

What do the critics say about Plane?

Plane was reviewed fairly well by Gerard Butler action standards, and has a 77 percent Rotten Tomatoes average (compared to Angel Has Fallen’s 39 percent, for example).

The actioner’s old-school atmosphere (Telegraph), Gerard Butler’s entertaining performance (Little White Lies), and the film living up to the simplicity of its title (Vulture) are praised. At the AV Club, Jordan Hoffman summarizes:

If you have a ticket for [Plane] buys, you should be aware that there is no such thing as first class. But with moderate expectations you will reach your goal.

Plane has been in German cinemas since February 2, 2023. The Frenchman Jean-François Richet directs the film, which was released in 2008 with the excellent gangster two-parter Public Enemy No. 1 – Murder Instinct and Public Enemy No. 1 – Death Instinct Convinced.
