The accident investigation completed – that’s why the train derailed onto Malmbanan

– There are risks of cracks occurring in older rails and causing accidents. These cracks can be difficult to detect. The recommendation is therefore that the Swedish Transport Administration takes measures, says SHK in its final report.

40 wagons derailed

The train that derailed was on its way from Koskullskulle to Kiruna with iron ore when it derailed with 40 of 68 carriages. Extensive damage occurred to wagons and infrastructure, while the load was spread over the hard-to-reach accident site.

The investigation by the National Accident Commission shows that the derailment was likely caused by a rail break that was due to an internal crack in the rails. Despite checks, the cracking had not been detected within the Swedish Transport Administration’s system for preventive maintenance.

Wants comprehensive examination

According to the Swedish Transport Administration’s maintenance plan, the track on the section in question will be replaced starting in 2025, but the accident commission warns:

– However, this type of crack can occur regardless of the type and age of rails, although it is more common in older rails. Therefore, the Swedish Transport Administration should investigate what would be required to better identify this type of cracks.
