The accident commission completed in Vassijaure – took several tons of rails and wheels with it

LKAB has cleared the wagons from the track and now the Swedish Transport Administration’s work remains to restore the track. The work mainly consists of changing the sleepers after a 15 kilometer stretch from Tornehamn to Vassijaure. Some rails, switches and catenary at the accident site also need to be replaced.

Careful work

The accident commission left the area during the latter part of the Christmas holiday and now they will carry out more thorough examinations of material that they have taken with them from the scene of the accident.

It is about smaller parts of the rails as well as the wagon wheels that are believed to be the first to derail.

– We want to examine this more closely to see how this could have happened, says investigation chairman Jonas Bäckstrand.

Cool job

Jonas Bäckstrand, together with his colleague Johan Gustafsson, worked over Christmas with the investigations in Vassijaure – some days in temperatures down to minus 20 degrees.

It will take several months before the picture around the causes begins to become clear and up to a year before a final report will be ready.

The Swedish Transport Administration cannot provide a reliable forecast for when traffic can resume.

In the clip, Jonas Bäckstrand talks about how they have worked on site and what happens next.
