The academic hospital is forecasting a record deficit

In the last two years, the hospital has reported a deficit of around SEK 500 million. This year it is leaning towards the double.

According to Ylva Opard, director of finance at Akademiska sjukhuset, the high inflation and a care queue after the pandemic are behind the fact that the deficit looks set to be bigger than ever.

— I have spoken to colleagues at other university hospitals and they are in the same financial position as us, with roughly the same deficits in relation to the size. It is a national problem where healthcare is underfunded, says Ylva Opard to the newspaper.

From a political point of view, the hospital has received the message that no more money will be pushed.

The plan is to primarily reduce the hired workforce. But it has not had the desired effect so far and it may lead to the need to close care facilities.

“A list has been made of operations that can be reduced based on medical priorities, which will also reduce the need for care places,” says Ylva Opard.
