The 5 Hardest Bosses in Diablo History

After the last test of Diablo 4, a discussion arose in the community as to whether the game wasn’t too difficult. MeinMMO has rummaged a little in the past and looked to see if there weren’t even greater challenges earlier.

Diablo 4 seems to attract a lot of newbies and those players who haven’t played Diablo for years. The server slam was extremely well received, but got fans debating: is the game too hard or too easy?

Especially the world boss Ashava was considered a benchmark for many. It was so tough in the test that even the boss of Diablo failed him several times. The community disagrees:

  • some say: that’s how it’s supposed to be Diablo must challenge them as a player.
  • others say: Diablo is a casual game that Blizzard needs to make more accessible.
  • The first faction in particular points out that in the past of Diablo there were always bosses that really heated up the players. And that’s true.

We’ve trawled through old forums, Reddit, the web, and our own memories to bring you the 5 hardest bosses in Diablo (so far).

Difficulty is always subjective. Even Ashava was killed solo by some players – on hardcore. You can watch the fight here:

    1. The Butcher (Diablo 1)

The Butcher, better known by its original name “Butcher”, is probably the most well-known boss in the series after Diablo itself. This is probably due to how you first encountered it in the first part of Diablo:

In a dark dungeon full of enemies, surrounded by stone walls, you open a door and find body parts and blood there, like in a human slaughterhouse. A huge demon then greets you with his oversized ax and roars: “Fresh Meat!” The butcher is extremely dangerous:

  • he can pull you towards him with a hook
  • his attacks pack a punch, some almost always killing instantly
  • the Butcher is damn fast for its size
  • The demon was so popular that it even appeared in Diablo 3 and Heroes of the Storm. And in Diablo 4 you can also meet him, but as a very nasty surprise in almost every dungeon.

    2. Duriel (Diablo 2)

Almost as nasty as the butcher is Duriel in Diablo 2. The “Lord of Pain” is the boss of the 2nd act, so you’ll meet him relatively early. Duriel is particularly bad because he simply rolls over you quite unexpectedly when you first meet:

  • you enter a room and suddenly there is a huge maggot with claws and a mouth in its stomach
  • you yourself are still relatively low in level and probably have rather poor gear
  • there are hardly any possibilities to really avoid it
  • Like the Butcher, you suddenly find yourself in a small arena with a huge demon lord. Duriel hits hard and will surely kill you at least once, especially on your first playthrough. He is still considered one of the hardest bosses, at least if you don’t know him.

    3. Uber Mephisto (Diablo 2)

Some bosses in Diablo 2 got an over-form in the course of the “Pandemonium” event, including Duriel, Andariel (which becomes Lilith) and of course Mephisto. The Great Evil is actually the final boss of Act 3.

Uber bosses can only be found in a special version of Tristram in Diablo 2, for which you must first collect keys. The event is optional but brings you special rewards like one of the best items in the game.

Uber Mephisto is so tough because he can deal the most damage of all Uber bosses and also deals out two types of damage: cold and lightning. He is also immune to poison and blizzard damage and has strong defensive stats. Accordingly, you need good preparation and strong equipment against him.

Incidentally, Diablo is present in Uber-Tristram as “Pandemonium-Diablo”, because Uber-Diablo was already in the game because of too greedy players.

    4. Belial (Diablo 3)

With Belial, opinions are divided as to whether he should be considered one of the easier or the heaviest bosses in Diablo 3 – which is because he was a much greater challenge, especially when it was released.

The Lord of Lies is part of the final quest of Act 2 in Diablo 3 and has a unique boss fight: he himself is fixed in one position and you fight in a semicircle around him. The demon rakes you with various attacks, but above all poison puddles.

What makes Belial so tricky are his minions. The swarms of flies that he summons were clearly too strong, especially when Diablo 3 was released. Even on low difficulties they dealt hard, later they were almost deadly.

Only after a patch was the fight “acceptable” for most players – and worth it. With its 2 phases and its transformation, Belial is a visually very spectacular fight.

    5. Vitaath (Diablo Immortal)

Unlike all Diablo games before it, Diablo Immortal has a special Paragon mechanic that actively weakens you when you’re up against “too strong” opponents. If your Paragon is well below the level you should be, you’ll take more damage and deal less.

The game tells you that, but players only noticed the real effects of it with the second big “final boss” Vitaath. Vitaath slaughtered scores of players for participating with too little Paragon or poor response.

The big problem here was that reaching a higher Paragon was limited and progressed more and more sluggishly. There was supposedly even a real level limit that could only be exceeded after a certain time.

In addition, Vitaath could hit all enemies with several attacks and get a good deal of it. Weaker players died instantly. At the release of Vitaath, no one from the Paragon was “strong enough” to defeat the demoness. This was repeated with the next boss, Gorgothta.

    6. Diablo 3’s secret final boss

Even if the list only includes 5 opponents, we still have to mention a 6th boss: Error 37. When Diablo 3 was released, it probably ate up most of the fans’ lifetimes.

Hardly anyone could log in when the game started, and if they did, the connection didn’t last very long. The players collected their error codes partly out of desperation, partly cynically. The most common of these was error 37.

Some fans now also fear the return of this boss for Diablo 4:

The problem spawned dozens of memes, but also a lot of trouble. It wasn’t until days later that the servers were stable enough to be able to gamble without any problems – and even then there were still a few hiccups.

If and which of these bosses will celebrate their return in Diablo 4, we do not yet know – except in the case of the butcher. Because so far it is not even clear whether the top boss will actually be in the game:

Why is Diablo 4 actually called Diablo 4, but Diablo doesn’t appear at all?
