How is this list made up? We looked at the different parts of Grand Theft Auto and compared the protagonists of the games.

When compiling the ranking, we paid particular attention to the character traits of the respective people and whether or how they change over the course of the story. The more unique a character the better.

An important factor was also whether the characters follow certain principles, ideals or goals. For example, Claude from GTA 3 is not included in our ranking because his story is largely based on taking personal revenge – and in the meantime simply doing any job for various gangsters.

5th place: Carl Johnson – GTA San Andreas

What’s CJ’s story?

  • Carl Johnson (CJ) returns to his hometown of Los Santos after his mother’s murder.

    What makes Carl Johnson special? CJ is a family man and is very loyal to his brother, his business partners and his gang.   • During the robbery in Ludendorff, Michael faked his death in order to start a new life with his family. From then on they lived in Los Santos under the name “De Santa”, where he met the petty criminal Franklin Clinton.
  • When Michael finds out that his wife is cheating on her tennis coach, he destroys a house. However, the house belongs to the mistress of Martin Madrazo, the boss of a drug cartel.
  • Since Michael is forced by Madrazo to pay the cost of repairing the house, he becomes active as a criminal again and robs a jewelry store with Franklin. Through the robbery, Trevor learns that Michael is still alive and pays his former accomplice a visit.
