The 4th day of the war in Ukraine is brightening

Vladimir Putin is destroying the future of his country, says EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

1. Russia struck two oil targets in Ukraine at night

On the outskirts of Kiev, huge explosions were heard at night when an oil terminal exploded at the Vasylkiv air base. Vasylkiv is located about 40 kilometers south of Kiev.

In Kharkov, northeastern Ukraine, in turn, it was reported that the natural gas pipeline was on fire.

Russia is expected to strike Ukraine’s gas and oil infrastructure immediately after the military targets.

2. Russian banks out of the Swift system and restrictions on “golden passports”

-[Vladimir] Putin chose a path aimed at destroying Ukraine, but in fact he is at the same time destroying the future of his own country.

This is the comment of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen after he had agreed with the United States, Germany, France, Italy, and Canada to exclude certain Russian banks from the Swift payment system.

In addition, the international assets of the Russian Central Bank will be frozen.

Restrictions are also promised on so-called golden passports issued to wealthy Russian citizens. They have enabled people close to the Russian regime to avoid sanctions by buying a new nationality.

– We are aiming for their yachts, luxury housing, money and their ability to send their children to fine universities in the West, comments a British government official To The Guardian (switch to another service).

3. Is Russia blocking Finnair’s flights to Asia?

Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka (sd.) announced after midnight that Finland is preparing to close airspace from Russian air traffic.

Russia may respond by closing its airspace to Finnish flights – this is how it worked with the Baltic countries and Slovenia, and the countries will not be able to fly over Russia from today.

Finnair flies most of its Asian flights through Russian airspace, so a possible closure of Russian airspace by Finns could hit the airline hard.

According to various sources, EU countries would have already agreed together to close their airspace to Russian traffic.
