The 30 million episode that even George RR Martin cant

Game of Thrones ended in 2019 with the 8th season, but at the same time HBO was already planning the TV future of George RR Martin’s fantasy world. In addition to the upcoming prequel House of the Dragon, this also included the Bloodmoon series. the first episode was filmed, but even George RR Martin was never allowed to see them. This and other details have now been revealed.

This is the new information from the report on the Game of Thrones spin-off Bloodmoon

Bloodmoon was commissioned in 2018. The story should be round 8000 years before Game of Thrones play and tell of the Long Night when the White Walkers first attacked Westeros. The series was created by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men Days of Future Past) and unlike House of the Dragon, George RR Martin was not involved. The Hollywood Reporter’s new report sheds more light on the project’s implementation and failure:

  • As a “template” by George RR Martin there was basically only eight lines from his books describing the Long Night and the Age of Heroes.
  • The pilot episode was aired with a Budget from 30 to 35 million dollars realized. King Kong acquaintance Naomi Watts and Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower starred in sets specially designed for the series.
  • The Bloodmoon pilot has been completed and didn’t convince HBOwhich is why the broadcaster canceled the 2019 series.
  • Even George RR Martin isn’t allowed to watch the Bloodmoon pilot.
  • What exactly can we imagine by Bloodmoon?

New statements give an insight into the ambitious project, which differs greatly from House of the Dragon in terms of setting. Martin on this:

Bloodmoon was a very difficult task. This is about much more primitive people. There were no dragons yet. Much of the pilot revolved around the marriage of a southern house to a northern house and the whole history of the White Walkers. HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi describes the world-building as “unique” and the sound asvery mature, complex and intelligentwith themes like that “Disenfranchisement by Colonialism and Religious Extremism”.

Former WarnerMedia CEO Robert Greenblatt explained the reasons for the cancellation of the project as follows:

It wasn’t unwatchable or ghastly or anything. It was very well produced and looked exceptional. But it didn’t grab me like the original series did. It didn’t have the depth and richness of the original series pilot episode.
What do those involved say about the cancellation of the fantasy series?

However, an important voice about the creation of Bloodmoon is missing. Creator Jane Goldman hasn’t commented on it since HBO’s cancellation. It is unclear whether she is allowed to do this for contractual reasons.

Naomi Watts explained in 2020 that she couldn’t say anything about the Game of Thrones spin-off other than that she enjoyed working with Goldman (via Collider). Co-star Jamie Campbell Bower recently kept it to a vague one “everything happens for a reason”.

Meanwhile, the world of Game of Thrones is happily expanding. House of the Dragon gets up in Germany on the night of August 22, 2022 WOW (formerly Sky Ticket) * and available for retrieval via Sky Q. Further series are planned.
