The main suspect in the death of Lilian Dejean, municipal agent of Grenoble, was arrested Thursday, November 21 in Portugal. We know more about his profile.

More than two months after the death of Lilian Dejean, the cleaning agent for the city of Grenoble who was shot dead in September, the man suspected of having shot the 49-year-old agent was arrested this Thursday, November 21 at Portugal.

Abdoul Diallo, aged 25, “was incarcerated for the first time by the children’s judge of Grenoble at the age of 15”, detailed Éric Vaillant, the public prosecutor of Grenoble. He held a press conference on Friday, relayed in particular by BFMTV. The suspect already has 19 convictions on his criminal record, notably “for acts of violence” as well as for drug trafficking. Over the last ten years, the suspect was sentenced to six years in prison, he added.

A “relief” for the victim’s loved ones

What happened on September 8? Shortly after 7 a.m., an Audi violently collided with a Peugeot 2008 in front of Grenoble town hall. Lilian Dejean then allegedly tried to prevent the driver from escaping, but he fired two shots at him, which hit him in the chest. The municipal officer died from his injuries a few hours later.

The identity of the suspect was “known since the very day of the murder,” said the prosecutor. Indeed, his identity card had been found in the “vehicle that he himself had crashed in front of Grenoble town hall before attacking Lilian Dejean”. His arrest is “a relief” for the victim’s loved ones, reports The Dauphiné Libéré. “We had been waiting for this for weeks so that we could move forward with our mourning and get a glimpse of the trial,” one of his brothers, Jean-Marc Dejean, told the newspaper.

Currently detained in Portugal, the suspect will be handed over “in the coming weeks” to the investigating judge in Grenoble. This had issued a European arrest warrant against him. Éric Vaillant praised the “very hard work of the police and magistrates”, as well as the “European police and judicial cooperation” which led to this arrest. No less than forty investigators from the judicial police of Grenoble, Lyon and Porto were mobilized.
