It’s been 25 years since Half-Life captivated gamers, and now Valve has fixed a near-historic bug that has marred the gaming experience for decades. MeinMMO tells you what’s behind it.
The gaming world has changed since the release of the iconic first-person shooter Half-Life in 1998, but even after a quarter of a century, the game remains relevant and timeless. The game is still popular and even broke a player number record in 2022 thanks to a campaign by fans.
Valve, the development studio behind the masterpiece, recently took a step that will make fans’ hearts beat faster. Valve celebrated Half-Life’s 25th anniversary with a massive patch released on November 19th. Among other things, four new maps were added for Half-Life Deathmatch as well as three old maps that were only available on the CD “Half-Life: Further Data”. The game has also been optimized for the Steam Deck.
But in the wake of the excitement, a surprise follow-up patch on November 22nd finally fixed an age-old bug that has plagued the game for decades.
Here you can see a trailer for a mod for Half-Life 2:
Fixed the timing of the sequence where a tentacle grabs a scientist in the Blast Pit
Which bug has been fixed? It’s an animation error at a crucial moment in the game. During the sixth chapter, Blast Pit, a tentacle monster breaks through a pane of glass, knocks a scientist to the ground, and then drags him towards itself. But so far the whole thing has not been synchronous and there has been a delay. This created the impression that the tentacle was pulling the scientist away without physically touching him.
Player VinciusMedeiro6 recorded the pre-patch and post-patch scene and shared it on X. The top video shows the fixed scene and the bottom one shows how it was before. You can see both versions here:
How does the community react? Half-Life fans are mostly celebrating the bug fix and sharing their enthusiasm on Reddit. We have summarized a few comments for you:
