The 2023 income declaration campaign for the 2024 tax begins

The 2023 income declaration campaign for the 2024 tax begins this Thursday, April 11. And this year, millions of taxpayers will be able to fill it out directly on their smartphone.

Like every year in April, the annual campaign for declaring the previous year’s income for the current year’s taxes begins. From this Thursday, April 11, 2024, French taxpayers will gradually receive a message from the Directorate General of Public Finances (DGFiP), informing them that they must check, complete and validate their 2023 income declaration for the 2024 tax. For most people, this process is now done online on the site impots.gouv.fr from their Personal Space, and for more than ten million of them, this declaration is pre-filled using information collected by the tax administration throughout the year.

But the little new thing in 2024 is that it will be possible for some to complete and validate this income tax return from the impots.gouv mobile application, available on the Play Store for Android and on the App Store for iOS. This application already allowed taxpayers benefiting from a complete pre-filled declaration to validate it, but not to make changes, even simple ones. From 2024, it will therefore become possible to make additions to your pre-filled declaration directly on your smartphone, whether to correct incorrect amounts, add dependents or transmit a new RIB for the collection of the remainder to be paid or the reimbursement of overpayment.

To take advantage of mobile declaration, simply install the impots.gouv application on your Android or iOS device, log in using your identifiers (tax number and password), then press on the button Declare my income on the home page. If you are eligible for this system, you will then be guided through different pages to check, modify and validate the information in your 2023 tax return, such as your marital and family situation, your income (salaries, pensions, etc.) and your deductible expenses (childcare costs, alimony). However, only taxpayers in the simplest financial situations will have access to the mobile reporting system at this time, and you may receive a message telling you that you are not eligible at this time, as shown in the screenshot screenshot below.

In this case, you will then have to go directly to the impots.gouv.fr website from a web browser, access your Personal Space and complete your annual income tax return using the traditional method. For the moment, declaration via the impots.gouv mobile application is therefore really reserved for taxpayers with a simple tax situation which has not changed since last year. Furthermore, even if you manage to access the declaration via the mobile application, pay close attention to the information provided on your pre-filled declaration, especially in the event of a change in your personal and financial situation, such as marriage, separation or new types of income. Please note that to report certain modifications or transmit certain supporting documents, you will still have to go through the official tax website, pending future developments and improvements to the mobile application.
