Last year the Golden Globes fell to their lowest point. The once influential film and series award, which is one of the milestones of the Oscar season, has degenerated into a mockery of Hollywood. Several media boycotted the event because the responsible Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was unwilling to make its membership more diverse. Not to mention the allegations that have been coming up for years “Culture of Corruption” in the HFPA (LA Times). The broadcaster NBC refused to broadcast and so the Golden Globes 2022 were announced in a press release.
This time everything should be different. The HFPA vowed to improve in 2023 and so the 80th Golden Globe Awards took place in public again last night.
Winners include House of the Dragon, Dahmer and a Black Comedy
Big Movie Winner of the Night was The Banshees of Inisherin, Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell’s reunion with their Bruges see… and die? director Martin McDonagh. The black comedy has won three awards, including leading actor Farrell.
Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans won Best Drama. Actors also received awards for Cate Blanchett (Tár), Austin Butler (Elvis) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once). Incidentally, Black Panther 2 supporting actress Angela Bassett won Marvel for the first time an acting globe.
In the series area Evan Peters from the Netflix series Dahmer was able to celebrate his first-ever Golden Globe, despite the series causing controversy when it was released. Other award-winning series stars included Zendaya (Euphoria), Quinta Brunson (Abbot Elementary), Yellowstone lead Kevin Costner and The Bear chef Jeremy Allen White.
House of the Dragon was named the best drama series of the year, which the fantasy predecessor Game of Thrones never managed to do at the Globes. The White Lotus (anthology) and Abbott Elementary (comedy) also received prizes in the main categories.
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted the evening.
