A family moves to a remote hotel over the winter, where an eerie presence leads father Jack to violence. He gives in the same murder that has been causing mischief in the hotel for several generations.
It is indicated in several places that Jack is the perfect candidate for manipulation by the evil hotel. As can be seen in the many troubling visions that the characters have in the course of the film, the hotel has taken over the souls of countless victims and captured them as a constant resident of the hotel, which will now be his fate despite his death in snow.
