The medieval world of Game of Thrones is rough, brutal and sexist. The series is also characterized by its many strong female characters who can hold their own against all odds. But which women are actually the strongest and most powerful? In the power ranking we are looking for the top 10.
How was the ranking created? In Game of Thrones there are many very different characters who are strong in their own way. In the ranking we don’t want to limit ourselves to just one aspect, but rather get a more general overview.
In addition, we only deal with characters that also appear in the series.
Spoiler warning: To explain the ranking, spoilers for all seasons of Game of Thrones are included.
10th place: Lyanna Mormont
Lyanna Mormont is not the best fighter on this list, nor does she wield the most political power. At first glance she just looks like a little girl, which is actually what she is. But it’s better not to underestimate them.
At just 10 years old, she became the head of House Mormont. Despite her young age, she has more backbone than probably most adult lords and ladies in Westeros. She doesn’t allow herself to be intimidated, doesn’t let anyone tell her anything and stands up for her people. She would rather die in battle with her soldiers than flee from the White Walkers.
9th place: Mellisandre
Mellisandre is one of the most mysterious characters in Game of Thrones. Her almost fanatical belief in the “Lord of Light” leads her down many wrong paths, for example when she sacrifices Sharin, the daughter of Stannis Baratheon.
At the same time, as a “red priestess”, she also has powerful magical abilities. She gives birth to a shadow that murders Renly Baratheon. She disguises her true age and appearance using her necklace. And most importantly, she manages to bring Jon Snow back to life.
On top of that, she is excellent at manipulation and uses this to achieve her goals. On the other hand, she sometimes seems to doubt her abilities and her mission, which is particularly clear in the books.
8th place: Ygritte
As a member of the “free people,” Ygritte lives in the harsh north, beyond the Wall. There she not only defies cold, hunger and the numerous dangers that can be encountered there. She also knows how to assert herself in the often harsh treatment of her tribe. She always stands up for herself, is wild, brave and stubborn.
She also has a lot to offer in combat, as she is an excellent archer. Ultimately, her love for Jon Snow becomes her undoing and she dies in the Battle of the Black Fortress – but not before defeating numerous brothers of the Night’s Watch.
