Even the most powerful wizard is powerless without the right spell. And there are quite a few of them in the world of Harry Potter. But which spells are actually the strongest?
How was the ranking created? Which spell seems particularly powerful at the moment certainly depends very much on the situation. For example, the head bubble spell can mean the difference between life and death if you have to spend a long time underwater. But it will certainly be of little use in a wizard duel.
There are also numerous mysteries in Harry Potter that were created by magic spells in one way or another. However, it is often not explained how exactly this happened.
Spoiler alert: To explain the ranking, various events from films and books are discussed.
10. Expelliarmus
In last place in this ranking comes the trademark of Harry Potter himself: the disarming spell Expelliarmus. At first the magic doesn’t seem to do much. Harry also repeatedly receives ridicule because of his frequent use.
But over the years, Harry has proven more than once how useful this little charm can be. After all, disarming the enemy almost always leads to immediate victory. Because what’s a magician without a magic wand?
9. Legilimens
The Legilimens spell combined with firm eye contact allows the user to read the thoughts and feelings of the other person in a certain way. This allows the spell to be used as a powerful tool in many situations.
Lord Voldemort himself used the spell significantly to keep his Death Eaters under control.
However, with strong willpower, it is possible to protect one’s mind from intruders. Therefore, Legilimens only ends up in 9th place in this ranking.
8. Fidelius Charm
With the complicated Fidelius Charm it is possible to hide entire buildings from unwanted eyes. Only one person, the so-called Secret Keeper, can make the location discoverable for others. That being said, the spell creates the ultimate untouchable and unreachable hiding place.
So overall the spell is very powerful. However, the need for a secret keeper also poses a high security risk. Lily and James Potter also had to learn this the hard way when they were betrayed to Voldemort by their secret keeper, Peter “Wormtail” Pettigrew. Therefore the spell only ends up in 8th place.
7. Unbreakable Vow
The Unbreakable Vow is a powerful magical ritual that creates a binding contract between two people. If the swearer breaks his promise, it inevitably means his death.
This means that the spell is not only life-threatening, it is also an extremely powerful means of controlling others. There is also no way to cancel the contract, even if both parties wish to do so.
However, the promise can settle or be circumvented through clever interpretation. Because the weak point of the spell is the exact wording. The oath only refers to the exact wording of the promise; possible deviations are not taken into account. Overall, the magic comes in 7th place.
6. Obliviate
With the oblivion spell Obliviate, it is possible to erase targeted memories or even a person’s entire identity from their memory. This ability to deprive people of lived experiences is undoubtedly very powerful.
Gilderoy Lockhart, for example, stole the credit for other people’s achievements and made himself a celebrity.
The spell becomes even more powerful when combined with the False Memory Spell, which places false memories on the victim. However, the exact spell for this is not known. Using both memory spells, the young Vorldemort, among others, framed his uncle for the murder of his father.
