On his adventures in the books and films, Harry Potter encounters some dangerous beasts. But which magical creatures are actually the most powerful? In the ranking we look at the top 10.
The classification: The Ministry of Magic has also been concerned about the dangers of animals. The “Department for the Management and Supervision of Magical Creatures” differentiates between five levels of danger:
All of the creatures on this list are classified as Category XXXXX and are therefore extremely deadly.
10th place: Horned Serpent
The horned snake is considered an extremely intelligent animal. As their name suggests, these snake-like creatures have horns on their heads. A subspecies found in North America also has a valuable diamond on its forehead. This supposedly gives snakes the ability to fly and become invisible.
There used to be many other species all over the world, especially in Western Europe. However, it was already extinct there in the Middle Ages because parts of it were often used as an ingredient in magic potions.
It is said that a witch named Isolt Sayre once befriended a Horned Serpent. Although Isolt didn’t speak Pasel, she was able to communicate with the snake. When she later co-founded the American magic school Ilvermorny, she named her house after the Horned Serpent.
There are many legends surrounding the magical abilities of the Horned Serpents. However, they appear to be less aggressive than the other creatures on this list.
9th place: Quintaped
The Qunitaped is a hairy creature with five legs. They are carnivores that prefer humans to be on their menu. Fortunately, they only exist in one very specific place, the Isle of Drear in Scotland.
There is a grotesque legend surrounding the creation of Quintapeds. Accordingly, the creatures were originally a family of wizards, the MacBoons. In revenge for an alleged murder, the entire family was turned into hairy monsters. Therefore, Quintapeds are also commonly known as “Hairy MacBoon”.
However, this approach was not particularly wise. The newly created monsters were now much more powerful. They took revenge in turn and killed their creators. Whether this theory is true has never been confirmed. Because no magician has ever managed to catch a Quintaped.
8th place: Acromantula
The Acromantula is a giant, eight-eyed spider capable of human speech. She was originally bred by wizards – presumably to guard things. Today it is primarily native to the jungles of Borneo in Southeast Asia.
Similar to common spiders, it catches its prey in webs. It also has a poisonous secretion that allows it to easily kill its large victims. Acrumantulas usually live in colonies, which makes them even more dangerous.
Despite their almost human intelligence, they pose a great danger to wizards. After their meeting with Hagrid’s “house spider” Aragog, Harry and Ron would certainly confirm this.
