The BA2 variant, situation abroad, covid 0 strategy… Doctor Gérald KIERZEK, emergency physician at the Hôtel Dieu de Paris and medical director Doctissimo, takes stock of the situation.

It’s now a ritual, a little live video of my care in the emergency room to take stock of the situation.

The news is the rise in cases of contamination. I would like to anticipate the alarmist discourse. There are 70,000 cases per day of contamination, of course, but still without correlation with hospitalizations. We are still on Omicron and its variant, the BA2 strain, which is more contagious but is not responsible for serious illnesses. Its moderate symptoms are rather good news.

France, South Korea: the same strategy

If we look at what is happening abroad, the same variant, the same strain in South Korea is 600,000 cases per day for a country of 52 million inhabitants. The Koreans are not panicking, and they too are relaxing restrictive measures such as the test/trace/isolate policy. These 600,000 cases are ultimately mild, minimal to moderate, and hospitalizations and critical care hospitalizations are not increasing.

We will live with the Covid

By the way, it is the failure of the “0 covid” strategy. The Koreans who were strong advocates of this strategy, not living with the virus, trying to eradicate it and hunt it down… it doesn’t work especially with a highly contagious variant. So it’s a little message to all those who defended this strategy of “0 covid”, well no, it doesn’t work, we have to learn to live with it!

The good news is that we still have no serious cases and above all that we have a population of fragile people who are now vaccinated. This is what we must defend!
