That’s why you should always only have one BankID: “Important to understand”

Thats why you should always only have one BankID Important

One of today’s most important tools for managing everyday life is the mobile phone. And most of us have a Mobile BankID installed on our mobile phones.

In 2023, the equivalent of 99.4 percent of Sweden’s population aged 18-67 had at least one BankID installed.

In line with the development of technology, the number of frauds has unfortunately increased significantly in recent years. A total of 238,371 fraud crimes were reported last year, an increase of 22 percent compared to 2022.

Of the number of frauds, the most common are card fraud, fraud without a physical card and fraud through social manipulation, according to the Crime Prevention Council (BRÅ).

The fraudster uses BankID to deceive you

A common tool the fraudster uses is the mobile phone and BankID, where they try to get you to hand over sensitive information and bank details. In some cases, they may even try to get you to sign a bank transfer with just BankID. All to grab the money of unsuspecting private individuals.

The development has resulted in more and more banks, authorities and companies warning both customers and the general public about the cunning tricks.

Due to the development and the increased risk of being exposed to a fraud attempt, it is important to keep an eye on both sensitive information and bank details such as your private BankID.

In some cases, however, it can be an advantage to have more than one BankID. Let’s say you have a private phone and a work phone, then it can sometimes help with BankID on both devices.

– We see no problem from a security point of view that one and the same person has BankID on more than one device at the same time. In the physical world, one and the same person can hold a driver’s license, passport and national ID card at the same time, has Charlotte Patakywho works with financial ID technology at BankID, previously told Nyheter24.

In times where you need to keep everything tighter in both mobile and BankID, there are certain things you need to think about, above all when it comes to securing your BankID.

– The advantage of one is that you only have one device to worry about. We have no recommendation regarding if you wish to have more BankIDs, but it is, on the other hand, important to understand that BankIDs are private e-identification that should never be shared with anyone else. Just like a physical ID document, Charlotte Pataky now tells Nyheter24 and adds:

– In addition to that, you should never use your BankID at the request of someone who contacts you. Always read the text displayed in the BankID app and check where you are identifying yourself and what you are signing. If you are unsure, select cancel.

In addition, Pataky emphasizes the importance of understanding that your BankID can be equated with a document of value, and with that also comes a responsibility.

But if you don’t follow BankID’s recommendations, then you should think again if you were considering getting more. There are situations when you should definitely have only one Mobile BankID installed.

Pataky states that if users follow the recommendations for safe use, there is no increased risk. If you don’t do that, then the risk of fraud increases and then sitting with more people is not recommended.

How to use BankID safely

  • Activate notifications from BankID to check whether a BankID is activated for your social security number. You do this under settings in your phone.
