The microblog Bluesky was originally a project within Twitter at the time, which is now called X. Since then, Bluesky has spun off completely and founder Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s former CEO, has left.
Today, Bluesky is one of X’s main competitors – and has gained more and more attention after the US presidential election.
Evelina Galli, tech reporter at P3 in Sveriges Radio, says that several users, including large media houses, have started to leave X because they no longer recognize the platform.
– It is believed that the owner Elon Musk has used the platform to spread his views and he has been clear in his support for Donald Trump. So many think that the platform has become an extended arm of Donald Trump and therefore want to find alternatives.
Small compared to X
Evelina Galli describes the microblog as “a little more open and kind”. Users can customize their own experience to a greater extent and have more control over what appears in their own feed.
Compared to X, Bluesky is still a pittance, roughly 20 million registered users. And in order for it to take over X, it must, among other things, attract users that others want to follow, says Evelina Galli.
– We’ve seen people leave X in droves before, too, but the platform is still there.
