The Big Bang Theory delighted with bizarre details for years – one of them is the broken elevator. As the series makers stood, they followed a specific plan.
The truth about the broken elevator
The broken elevator, as we have known since season 3, with the title 22 with the title the truth about the elevator, the result of a failed experiment by Leonard, Wolowitz and Raj. As Fandom Wire opened July 2024, there was a greater intention behind it.
Series creator Bill Prady explained to the Wondercon:
One of the things you need is a place where the figures can run and speak. When Chuck Lorre and I worked on Dharma and Greg, we had this street set on which the characters were able to talk. And we had it because it was an unused stage at 20th Century Fox, where we shot Dharma.
A simple idea saved everything:
We tried to do this with Big Bang, but it was just too much space and we started talking about it: ‘What if you always had to go up the stairs?’
This resulted in numerous personal moments between Penny, Sheldon and Co., which would have escaped us without this simple but essential detail. Because instead of casually jumping into an elevator, they laboriously had to climb a staircase – and got into conversation.
