Do you remember Castle? The crime series with The Rookie title star Nathan Fillion, in which he solved cases for eight seasons as crime writer Richard Castle? Since the series suddenly ended eight years ago, ABC’s former successful format seems to have been somewhat forgotten. You almost remember what you suspected Drama behind the sceneswhich is said to have taken place with co-star and investigator Stana Katic aka Kate Beckett.
But what was really behind the Castle feud between Caskett, what the series ship is called among fans? And who was really to blame for the series’ early end? Let’s investigate the matter a little!
Was Castle charmer Nathan Fillion less charming on set?
In April 2016, the industry publication Deadline exclusively reported that ABC was planning a ninth Castle season with Fillion, but had neither Katic’s contract nor that of cast member Tamala Jones aka Dr. Parish would extend.
Around the same time, US Weekly reported on Fillion’s longstanding misconduct on the Castle set. “Nathan was mean to Stana for a long time”, an anonymous source is said to have revealed. It even went so far that the two co-stars received couples therapy to smooth things over.
Then on May 12th of the same year the shocker: ABC canceled the series entirely, which inevitably made the season finale, which ran just four days later, the series finale. This was despite the fact that showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter already had plans for season 9 and expected to continue to have work.

What was the reason for the alleged tensions behind the scenes?
Fillion and Katic were rumored to have dated for a while at the start of series production, which led to tensions after the breakup. However, this gossip was never clearly confirmed. While Katic’s management said at the time that there were no problems on set, the actress told Entertainment Weekly about one two years later “harsh end”.
According to TVLine, the two Castle co-leads each received a salary of $12 million for the eighth and final season, making them the seventh highest-paid men and women in the series business. Did ABC simply want to cut costs in half and in the end did their exit have nothing to do with a dispute? We will probably never know for sure, because to this day people are discreetly keeping a low profile.

“You have to weigh up a lot of different things.”said ABC President Channing Dungey in August 2016 at the TCA Press Tour (via US Weekly) about the cancellation of both Castle and Nashville. “And at the end of the day, I didn’t feel like our future necessarily lay in those two shows – even though Castle and Nashville have been good shows with good actors for a long time for us.”
Where can you stream Castle?
All eight seasons of the crime series with Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are available on the German Disney+ *.
So how did Castle turn out?
Warning, spoilers for the Castle series finale: The final episode of the series (8×22) is called Crossfire or Life and Death and was broadcast on May 16, 2016 on the US network ABC. Richard seems to have finally solved the case surrounding the corrupt CIA employee with the code name LokSat (Gerald McRaney). At home, however, he and Beckett are surprised by lawyer Caleb Brown (Kristoffer Polaha), who turns out to be a co-conspirator. There is an exchange of fire in which Brown dies while the Caskett duo lies bleeding on the ground.
The season would have ended with this cliffhanger if there had been a ninth season as planned, in which Beckett might even have been dead. Instead, we see a flash-forward seven years into the future: the couple now has three children and swears eternal loyalty to each other
