“That’s what makes your game so good”

A player wanted to get Baldur’s Gate 3 for his library, but failed in the purchase process. He contacted Larian customer service and received a surprising response. He is currently inspiring the community with his story.

Larian created a huge hit with Baldur’s Gate 3 and really won at the Game Awards 2023, among other things: the game won in a total of five categories. Game director Swen Vincke appeared on stage in his plate armor and was celebrated for it.

Baldur’s Gate conquered Steam on its final release day: the team expected 100,000 simultaneous players, but over 700,000 came. And even eight months after the release, the development studio managed to positively surprise the community.

On Reddit, user “TeenyGremlin” reports how he contacted Larian customer service with a query. He no longer expected an answer to his “niche question”, but then Larian got back to him and completely blew him away.

Larian donates a copy to the library

What was his request to customer service? User “TeenyGremlin” wrote on Reddit on April 5 that Larian’s customer service had just blown him away. He works in a public library in the USA. The “tax-funded” institution is not allowed to pay taxes on purchased items, but he wanted to purchase a physical copy of Baldur’s Gate 3 for his library.

So in January, he contacted Larian customer service to request an alternative billing method or a tax-free account in their store. He filed the paperwork but didn’t expect Larian, as a Belgian company, to be able to help.

He was “95% sure the answer would be no,” but had to give it a try because he loved the game so much. The radio silence that prevailed for three months did not surprise him. “I assumed the answer was either no or that the weird, niche question got lost in someone’s inbox. It wasn’t a big deal and I knew I had done my best,” he writes.

What did the developers surprise the player with? According to the user, Larian is actually sending the library a physical copy of Baldur’s Gate 3.

After three months he received an answer to his request:

Today I finally got a response from Larian saying they would donate a copy to my library. I am absolutely overwhelmed. Someone bothered to reach out about an almost unanswerable question, months after I was sure it had been forgotten.

I don’t know if someone spent three months trying to find an answer to this question, or if it fell into oblivion and someone just noticed and decided to revisit it, but I’m blown away.

I have never experienced a company that was so committed to providing an answer and/or a different solution. I know it’s a small thing, but it was so cool.

“This is so wholesome and I love it”

How does the community react? The top comment with over 2,880 upvotes comes from “LazyEights”. He writes: “You must know how difficult it is to work in a library where there are so many delicate books lying around.” This is an allusion to a scene in Act 3 of the game, you can watch a short video about it Reddit.
