Thats how good the new Opel Frontera is

Opel follows its strategy of offering the same model with different powertrains, which means that the new Frontera is available as both a petrol and electric car.

Despite sharing a name with the rugged, off-road Frontera from the ’90s, the similarities are largely non-existent.

Instead, the new Frontera focuses on a functional and robust approach.

Only the necessary

Opel Frontera has a minimalist philosophy and focuses on the essentials, without adding unnecessary equipment. Opel targets families who need a car that can cope with everyday challenges, which is also reflected in the car’s decidedly functional design.

The result is a frugal car, regardless of whether you choose electric or petrol operation. Opel has invested in simplicity and functionality, which is also noticeable in the limited range of extra equipment – only two equipment packages are available to choose from.

The hybrid version can also offer up to seven seats, which is unusual for a car shorter than 4.5 meters. During the test drive in Mallorca, however, we did not have the opportunity to try the seven-seater variant.

The doors open wide, which makes it easier to get in, and the back seat offers plenty of room for both legs and head.

The luggage compartment holds 460 to 1,600 liters depending on the configuration, and the front seats have the typical Opel ergonomics. However, the interior is dominated by hard plastic, which contributes to a more spartan feel.

Simple technology and smart layout

The 10-inch instrument panel is easy to understand and shows all important information, even if the consumption is missing. The infotainment screen is also 10 inches and generally works well, although some lag was noticed in the test car.

Opel has also added two practical buttons on the steering wheel to quickly turn off the speed violation warnings and the lane keeping assist, two safety systems that are required by the EU but that intrude on the driving experience.

The electric Frontera offers instant throttle response, but is not a fast car – 0-100km/h takes 12.1 seconds, and the steepest hills in Mallorca proved a challenge.

The steering is direct and well-balanced, and the lack of drive modes shows that Opel has fine-tuned the car to deliver an optimal driving experience in most conditions.

The chassis is soft and the suspension absorbs bumps well, providing a comfortable ride regardless of speed.

Although wind and road noise penetrates the cabin, it is expected in this price range. The car’s lightness is clearly noticeable – with a curb weight of only 1,540 kilograms, the car feels agile and easy to handle.

The new Opel Frontera is a charming and practical option for those looking for an affordable electric car. Range and loading capacity make it best suited as a commuter car or second car, depending on needs.

Opel has created a car that focuses on the most important, without trying to be everything to everyone. The combination of driving pleasure, practicality and simplicity makes the Frontera a breath of fresh air in the range of new cars.
