This week, the Netflix 2023 movie preview trailer was released. It features stars like Gal Gadot, Chris Hemsworth and probably the most successful Netflix actress ever: Millie Bobby Brown. The Brit may not even be 20, but she leads the streaming service’s most popular series with Stranger Things and has been in the top 10 for weeks with Enola Holmes 1 and 2. So we should be all the more curious about her next Netflix project: Damsel.
What is the fantasy film Damsel about?
The title refers to the narrative cliché of the “damsel in distress” or damsel in distress. It’s about helpless female protagonists who have to be rescued by the hero. It has been used in fairy tales, novels and of course movies for ages. Imagine a princess threatened by a dragon and waiting for a prince to free her.
Damsel wants to subvert this stereotype: What if the prince doesn’t come and the princess has to help herself?

Millie Bobby Brown plays Princess Elodie, who comes from a country plagued by hunger and misery. In order to help her people, she accepts the proposal of the wealthy Prince Henry (Nick Robinson from Love, Simon). After the wedding, however, she realizes that the whole thing was just a trick. Because the wealth of the country is hard bought. Every year at harvest time a princess is sacrificed to a dragon. This time Elodie is the unlucky one and so she has to fighting alone for their survival.

Who is in the cast of the Netflix film alongside Millie Bobby Brown?
The feature film is directed by Spaniard Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who made a name for himself with thrillers and horror films such as Intacto and 28 Weeks Later.
The budget is estimated at $60 to $70 million, according to What’s on Netflix, which would make it slightly more expensive than the first Enola Holmes film. So you shouldn’t expect a massive fantasy epic with overwhelming effects, but rather one charming adventure film. Millie Bobby Brown has already proven in the two Enola films that she can easily carry films of this size.
When is Damsel coming to Netflix?
Instead of Enola Holmes 3 Damsel is waiting for us towards the end of the year. The fantasy film will be released on October 12, 2023 released on Netflix.
Incidentally, the next but one Netflix film with the Eleven actress is already certain: The Electric State will start on the streaming service on January 24, 2024. The Russo brothers (Avengers 3 and 4) are directing the science fiction film starring Chris Pratt.
