In February 2018, exciting news made the rounds in the galaxy far, far away. None other than DB Weiss and David Benioff, who are responsible for the Game of Thrones film adaptation Series sensation of the 2010s were supposed to tell an epic story in the Star Wars universe.
The plan was for the two of them to be one write and produce new trilogy. Around a year and a half later, in October 2019, the duo turned their backs on Star Wars and Lucasfilm had to put another failed film project in the coffin. But what story would they have told? Weiss and Benioff are now revealing this themselves.
The failed Star Wars trilogy from the Game of Thrones makers would have told about the first Jedi
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Benioff reveals that he wanted to get to the origins of the Jedi together with Weiss:
We wanted [die Geschichte] of the first Jedis tell. Basically it was about how the Jedi Order came to bethe first lightsaber…
But then Rian Johnson thwarted their plans with his Star Wars episode, as Weiss jokingly adds:
We were really annoyed when [Rian Johnson] called his film The Last Jedi. He has the obvious title completely destroyed for what we were working on.
But why did the film or trilogy fail? Benioffs has an explanation.
In the end wanted [Lucasfilm] not do a story about the first Jedi. We had a very specific story idea in their head, and ultimately they decided they didn’t want to do that. And we completely understand that. It is their company and their intellectual property. We weren’t the droids they were looking for.
While Weiss and Benioff moved on to create the science fiction series 3 Body Problem at Netflix, Lucasfilm finally returned Idea of the project returned. Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold is now directing a Star Wars film that deals with the beginnings of the Jedi and the Force.
Dawn of the Jedi: When does the new Star Wars film start?
Mangold’s project was announced at the Star Wars Celebration in April 2023. However, the theatrical release has not yet been determined. In addition to the Dawn of the Jedi film, there are currently three more Star Wars films in development: A Rey sequel starring Daisy Ridley, a Mandoverse film from Dave Filoni and the newly announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, which Jon Favreau is bringing to the big screen.
