“That shouldn’t have happened”

Putin and Scholz support diplomacy to ease tensions in Ukraine

Eteri Tutberidze shocked 15-year-old Kamila Valijeva with her rude comment. Kiira Korpi took a firm stand on the state of figure skating at the Sports Studio. According to Korvi, the species must change.

– Why did you give up, why did you stop fighting?

Here was a 15-year-old figure skater caught in the middle of a doping court Kamila Valijevan coach Ether Etherberidzen a question to his athlete after a free program that ended in tears of disappointment.

Valijeva’s tear-free women’s figure skating program also won Kiira Korven to move in the broadcast of the Sports Studio after the competition.

– Dramatic ending. On top of that, I feel like this shouldn’t have happened. If the doping case is further confirmed for Sample B, I have the feeling that this young person has been deceived quite drastically in terms of adults and the coaching system.

– I’m kind of so angry and I’m annoyed for him. Knowing Tutberidze’s girls in light of history, Valijeva has virtually no second Olympic chance. It can be almost certain. The new 15-, 16- and 17-year-olds are already coming from there, Korpi said, referring to the Russian coach’s way of raising the skaters to the top at a very young age.

According to Korvi, the methods of a Russian successful coach for training top skaters are largely based on the age of the athletes.

– Tutberidze’s method is based on the fact that when a woman has not yet grown into a woman, it is easier to make rotating movements with a lower body weight. Few can do four jumps after reaching adulthood.

“Is Valijeva a safe adult in her life?”

– Was Valijeva even mentally ready or did this only traumatize her after the doping case? I was left with a miserable mood about the race, even though the performances of the medalists were great.

– Now Valijeva’s mother and grandfather are drawn into this same tangle. My question is whether Valijeva has safe adults in her life and how she can cope mentally with such a traumatic event, Korpi pondered with the sequels of the Sports Studio.

– Figure skating is a serious place to look in the mirror. These child athletes cannot be trampled any further in any way.

Korpi said in a disappointment on the broadcast that figure skating has gone in the wrong direction and too far in many unethical ways, of which he says doping is just one.

According to Korvi, this is not just a Russian problem either.

– In Russia, these problems are state-led and perhaps more systematic than in the rest of the world. There are more or less problems with children’s inappropriate training culture and coaching.

According to Korvi, the situation requires a reaction from the entire species audience.

– I hope that at the latest this would be a big revival for the entire international figure skating audience. Skaters and fans have been quite shocked by this hustle and bustle.

“Raising the age limit will not happen for many years”

– Perhaps it is necessary to think at all why we admire such children’s sports and why we do not set an age limit so that adults can compete here and take responsibility for possible doping violations, Korpi asked.

According to Korvi, the current state of women’s figure skating is the result of two different Olympics. The first is the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, where as a result of a judging scandal, the points system for the entire sport was redesigned to divide points from individual elements. According to Korvi, scoring could have a positive effect on the preservation of athletes’ health.

– Now the skaters are 17 years old, if not earlier, completely broken, because the training is raw if you want to do the four-point jumps that bring the most points. In scoring, weight could also be given to artistry and creativity, that is, to everything that I think is the most awesome and wonderful in figure skating.

The second turning point is in Sochi in 2014.

– Russia put all the bangs on the game for Sochi and began to state figure skating in many different ways. The rise of Tutberidze skaters, who have dominated women’s skating in recent years, has its roots Yulia Lipnitskaya to a gold medal at the Games.

Lipnitskaya, who won gold in the Sochi team competition, contracted anorexia and ended her skating career at the age of 19.

– We can no longer admire the children’s stars of figure skating when we know the price they are paying. In Finland, we can be proud that our toddlers do not do quadruple jumps. Jenni Saarinen is a great example of how a figure skater can have a long, adult career.

Korpi himself would set the age limit for figure skating competitions at 18 years, so that the culture of the sport would recover and the health of teenagers would not be scrapped. However, getting through the change may only remain at the level of wishful thinking.

– This makes me feel desperate. Raising the age limit will not happen for many years, if at all. The Russians oppose it to the last because the system has been so functional for them. It scares me that other countries are following in with even younger ones, Korpi said.
