That dog breed is the most expensive to own

Interested in getting a dog? In addition to having time for a dog, you also need to make sure you have room in your wallet for one. How much it costs to own a dog can differ a lot depending on the breed you choose.

News24 have talked to Pernilla Melanderpress officer at Agria, who tells which breeds are the most expensive and cheapest to own.

What influence how expensive a dog is to own?

First of all, you should choose a dog that fits your lifestyle. But it never hurts to know what influences how much a dog costs to own. Melander tells some points that determine how expensive a dog is to operate:

  • How much it eats
  • Fur care and clipping
  • Breed-specific health problems
  • Insurance premium and veterinary visit.
  • You should always do that if your dog has eaten something strange – according to the vet

But what makes the cost really go away is if the dog has breed-specific health problems.

    – Larger breeds with breed-specific health problems provide higher insurance and more vet visits.

Melander warns of these dogs having breed-specific health problems:

  • Rottweiler
  • Irish Wolfhound
  • English bulldog
  • Bull terrier
  • Bullmastiff
  • Dobermann
  • Great Dane
  • When Nyheter24 compares Agrias insurance it is a breed that stands out. It is an Irish wolfhound, whose insurance can cost up to SEK 1,987 a month, i.e. SEK 23,844 per year.

Fat dogs are becoming more common – the mistake many owners make

The breeds that are the cheapest to own

At the same time, smaller and healthier breeds are the cheapest. Some examples of dogs that are cheap to own are:

  • Chihuahua
  • Jack russell terrier
  • Chinese Crested.
