A short lesson in Dutch beer history. The Canon distinguishes seven periods: ‘Oerbier’ (900), ‘Gruitbier’ (900-1300), ‘Hoppenbier’ (1300-1550), ‘The free beer’ (1550-1650), ‘Beer in decline’ (1650- 1835), ‘Beijersch Bier’ (1835-1980) and – pub fact for this weekend – since 1980 we have been living in the era: ‘Variety in beer’. Because a lot is happening in the beer field, says Volkers with pleasure. “There have never been so many breweries, which is really nice for the diversity.”
