At least 15 people have died in a shooting incident at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, the U.S. said, sources said.
Governor of Texas Gregg Abbot confirms that 14 students as well as one teacher have died. In addition, the suspected shooter has apparently died as a result of police shooting, Abbot adds.
Two police officers were also wounded by the bullets of the suspect shooter, but Abbot said the police were not seriously wounded.
Abbot says the suspected shooter was a local 18-year-old man armed with a handgun and possibly a rifle. The man had walked into Robb Elementary School at noon and started shooting.
Authorities said the man had acted alone.
Earlier, hospital sources said 14 people injured in the shooting had been taken to local hospitals for treatment.
According to the authorities, the local multi-purpose building will be used as a gathering place from which parents can in time pick up their children at home, as long as all the pupils have been counted and brought together.
Uvalde, with a population of about 16,000, is located about 130 kilometers west of the city of San Antonio.
The White House says U.S. President Joe Biden will give a speech at Uvalde’s school shooting in the evening at local time.
