Tesla the cheapest brand to maintain – Volvo costs twice as much

Tesla the cheapest brand to maintain Volvo costs twice

It’s the Consumers’ Association of America Consumer Reports which has conducted a study on how much cars from different brands cost in service and repair over ten years.

The figures show that costs can differ significantly between cars from different brands, and that costs can skyrocket when the car is a few years old and warranties and service packages have expired.

The cheap electric car cost SEK 48,000 to insure

Tesla clearly the cheapest

The brand whose cars are by far the cheapest to maintain is Tesla. According to the study, the maintenance cost for 10 years is just under SEK 44,000. For the first five years, you get away with a cost of just under SEK 6,300.

The second cheapest brand to maintain is Toyota with a cost of just under SEK 53,000 over ten years and just over SEK 12,000 over five years.

Volvo twice as expensive as Tesla

Brands such as Ford, Nissan and Hyundai also stand out in the study for their low maintenance costs, as do America-focused brands such as Buick, Lincoln and Chevrolet.

Sweden’s most popular car brand Volvo is one of the most expensive brands on the list, and costs more than twice as much to maintain compared to a Tesla. Over ten years, maintenance on a Volvo costs roughly SEK 101,000, and in the first five years you spend just under SEK 20,000.

However, maintaining a Volvo appears to be affordable compared to some other car manufacturers.

Land Rover in a class of its own

The German premium brands BMW, Audi and Mercedes are slightly more expensive than Volvo over a ten-year period with maintenance costs of around SEK 103,500, 108,000 and 115,000 respectively.

Porsche cars are even more expensive to maintain with a ten-year cost of just under SEK 154,000.

However, the most expensive brand in terms of maintenance is Land Rover, which is not entirely unexpected given the manufacturer’s reputation for quality.

In the first five years, the Land Rover owner has to spend around SEK 46,000 on service and repairs, which is more than what the Tesla owner spends in ten years. Over a ten-year period, the costs amount to nearly SEK 210,000.

Land Rover undoubtedly builds nice cars, and it obviously costs money to be at the top.
