Tesla is far behind BYD in terms of patents

Latest data, Chinese automotive giant BYDIt reveals that Tesla has a significant advantage over Tesla in terms of the number of patents related to electric vehicles (EV). While BYD has applied for 13,000 patents in the electric vehicle sector in the last two decades, Tesla has applied for only 863 patents in the same period.

BYD’s focus on patents has been primarily on battery technology, with approximately 50% of its patents devoted to batteries. This emphasis has enabled BYD to develop battery packs in-house, making the company a leader in the development and production of lithium-ion batteries with iron phosphate cathodes. These batteries are known for their affordable prices compared to ternary lithium batteries that use nickel and cobalt.

In contrast, Tesla took a different approach with fewer patent applications. Tesla’s strategy places a strong emphasis on software development, focusing on charging infrastructure and communication between electric vehicles and drivers to improve user experience and connectivity.

Patent experts have noted that Tesla’s relatively low patent count is surprising for a company of its size, raising questions about its dependence on software and the potential for imitation by rivals. Tesla reduces this risk by applying new production technology only in its own factories.

While patents provide a layer of protection, they also make details of the technology publicly available, opening up room for potential imitations. It is very important for BYD, which attaches great importance to proprietary battery technologies, to protect its innovations.

Despite their different approaches to patents, both BYD and Tesla are major players in the electric vehicle industry. While BYD’s expertise in battery technology sets it apart from others, Tesla’s emphasis on software and user experience has been a key part of its success.

BYD’s commitment to in-house battery development is a differentiating factor, as many electric vehicle manufacturers rely on third-party suppliers. This autonomy gives BYD a competitive advantage and underscores its commitment to innovation and self-reliance.

As competition in the electric vehicle market continues to intensify, BYD and Teslacontinues to be a leader in this field, each with its own unique approach and vision. The patent disparity underscores the different strategies and priorities of these automotive giants and leaves room for continued innovation in the electric vehicle industry.
