Tesla chooses TSMC over Samsung to order 4nm chip

DigiTimes Asia reports that Tesla has made a big deal with TSMC for the production of 4nm chips. If this deal is real, and it usually does, Tesla will be among the 7 biggest TSMC customers.

The aforementioned chips, based on the 4nm architecture, will be used for Tesla’s future driverless hardware, and mass production will begin in 2024 at TSMC’s new factory in Arizona. It is planned that the same factory will produce chipsets with 3nm production architecture in 2026 and provide products to Apple. When finished, the Arizona facility will generate more than $10 billion in revenue for the company.

As a result, the gap between Samsung’s chip manufacturing business and TSMC will grow even larger. The Korean company had recently lost Qualcomm as a major customer for its flagship chipsets. This will be the second big blow for the company.
