Terzo Pilastro Foundation – International: new operating microscope at Regina Elena

Terzo Pilastro Foundation International new operating microscope at Regina

(Finance) – Thanks to Third Pillar Foundation – International there surgery of the Regina Elena National Cancer Institute (IRE) is now equipping itself with a new, latest generation instrument: the operating microscope. The Terzo Pilastro Foundation, on the precise impulse of his President Prof. Avv. Emmanuele FM Emanuele, who is also Honorary President of the Italian national delegation of the International Regina Elena Onlus Association (AIRH), chaired by HRH Prince Sergio of Yugoslavia, with this donation he intended to respond to theappeal of the AIHR, which is present in 56 states where it carries out activities of a spiritual, charitable and cultural nature following the example of the “Queen of Charity” Elena of Montenegro.

The operating microscope inaugurated today it will be used by all specialties, even if this type of instrument is mainly present in the best neurosurgery centers in the world for its very high performance for cranial and spinal microsurgery. More than 6,500 surgeries are performed at IFOs per year and, since 2010, approximately 5,000 robotic interventions have been performed in urology, thoracic surgery, gynecology, abdominal surgery and ENT. In 2021 alone, over a thousand interventions were carried out with the robot. Numbers that place the structure in line with the best world standards.

The investment of the microscope is around 500 thousand euros which are added to the 13.3 million euros from PNRR that the Lazio Region has foreseen in the investment plan for the enhancement of the technological and digital assets of the IFOs, over 25 million euros for the construction of the first Proton therapy center in central Italy.

“Our commitment to the strengthening and technological innovation of the structures of the entire regional health system continues. Concrete interventions in favor of local health, so that citizens can receive increasingly effective, modern and quality care” declared theCouncilor for Health Alessio D’Amato.

“The inauguration of this high-tech system, designed to perform complex surgical procedures, at the Regina Elena National Cancer Institute – commented the Prof. Avv. Emmanuele FM Emanuele – is an important milestone that is very close to my heart. Faced with the incidence of tumor pathologies on humans – especially with regard to brain and spinal diseases, for which the type of microscope we donate today is a primary use tool in the world – the Terzo Pilastro Foundation, which has always been careful to give concrete responses to the most urgent needs of the community in the field of health, could not remain indifferent. With this new Operating Microscope, which I strongly desired, it will be possible to identify and treat neoplasms more quickly and precisely, facilitating the delicate task of the surgeon and offering excellent levels of intervention to cancer patients “.

“This contribution – he said Franco Parasassi, President of the Rome Foundation – arises from the need that all hospitals have, and that all hospitals must pursue, to renew their technological park of health equipment. It is an urgent necessity. The technologies are there, they are available and it is necessary to ensure that the hospitals have them: it is not only important to equip oneself with new tools but also to renew them because this is to the advantage of the quality of life of the sick. This is also an important aspect for the training of operators who, by comparing themselves with increasingly innovative equipment, increase their level of professionalism which then translates into better healthcare for patients “.

In detail the microscope operative it allows the surgeon to visualize the neoplastic lesion more clearly, it is equipped with a robotic system that supports the surgeon’s manual skills and allows to keep the vision of the anatomical structures object of the intervention always in focus. It has integrated visualization systems for tumor resection also guided by the identification of vascular structures. It is also used in three-dimensional mode thanks to a very high quality camera, which combines optical and digital viewing modes.

“It is a highly innovative tool – he explained Gennaro Ciliberto, Scientific Director of IRE – which allows the surgeon to visualize the neoplastic lesion more clearly, to take more representative samples of the neoplasm and to remove the cancerous lesion with greater precision, sparing the healthy tissue. This is of enormous relevance in the case of tumors that have highly infiltrating capabilities such as brain tumors. “

“I am grateful to the President of the Third Pillar Foundation – International, Prof. Avv. Emmanuele Francesco Maria Emanuele – said Marina Cerimele, IFO General Manager – for the important contribution made to the expansion of our important technology park, aimed at guaranteeing the highest levels of excellence for patients. A collaboration between public and private is renewed which I hope will become increasingly systematic for the benefit of fragile patients “.

“It is an instrument with a filter system – he underlined Stefano Telera, Head of IRE neurosurgery – which allows, for example, the treatment of anaplastic tumor pathologies, in particular gliomas and lymphomas, by means of fluorescence-guided surgery. The method involves the administration of a photosensitizing agent that binds to the tumor before surgery. This allows the surgeon to more clearly visualize the neoplastic lesion, which, thanks to the filter, takes on a reddish hue. The excision of the lesion is thus more precise and healthy brain tissue is spared. ”

The microscope interfaces with the most modern neuronavigation systems and allows the visualization of information from the intraoperative CT navigator directly in the microscope eyepieces.
