Terna, reached 39.5 GW of wind and photovoltaic installed capacity in June

Energy Sector – Growing market driven by inflation and increased

(Finance) – According to data from Triadthe company that manages the national electricity grid, the capacity installed from wind and photovoltaic sources in Italy it reached, in the month of June, 39.5 GW. Considering all sources renewablein the first half of 2023 the increase in capacity in Italy is equal to almost 2.5 GW, an increase of about 1.4 GW (+120%) compared to the same period of 2022. In the last 18 months the monthly installations of new renewable capacity have substantially increased fivefold, progressively going from 110 MW per month in January 2022 to almost 500 MW per month in June 2023.

There electricity demand in our country in the month of June was equal to a total of 25.4 billion kWh, 9.2% less than in the same period of 2022. The IMCEI index developed by the company, which examines the industrial consumption of around 1,000 “energy-intensive” companies, recorded a decrease of 5.8% compared to June last year. The change in the transport and food sectors was positive, while all the other sectors, especially chemicals, had negative changes.

From the comparison between the first six months of the year and the same period of 2022 emerge substantial differences. The cumulative demand for electricity in Italy decreased by 5.3% (-4.3% the adjusted figure), a negative change also in theIMCEI index (-6.4%) and of production thermoelectric (-16.6%). On the other hand, the production of energy from renewable sources (+4.3%) and the import figure (+17.6%) increased.

In detail, June had the same number of working days (21) and one medium temperature month lower by as much as 2.3°C compared to June 2022, which led to a contraction of consume For cooling estimated at around 1.3 TWh. The figure for electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the effect of temperature, is therefore down by 4.9%. Geographically, the June 2023 trend change was negative everywhere: -8.8% in the North, -10% in the Center and -9.6% in the South and Islands.

In terms conjunctural, the value of electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the temperature effect, is substantially stable (+0.1%) compared to May 2023. Overall, in the second quarter of 2023, the seasonally adjusted demand figure is down by 1.4% compared to the first quarter. This result is also confirmed by the cyclical changes in the IMCEI index: the monthly figure is stationary compared to May (+0.2%), while the second quarter is down compared to the first quarter (-3%).

In June 2023 the Italian electricity demand 87.3% was met by domestic production and the remainder (12.7%) by the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production amounted to 22.3 billion kWh, down by 7.9% compared to June 2022. Renewable sources produced a total of 11.3 billion kWh, covering 44.3% of electricity demand ( against 35% in June 2022). The production from renewables in June was divided as follows: 43.5% water, 31.4% photovoltaic, 12.1% biomass, 9.2% wind, 3.8% geothermal.

They continue the recovery of production from water source (+44%) and the growth of photovoltaic (+10%) due respectively to the greater rainfall and the increase in installed capacity of approximately 3.8 GW compared to June 2022. Production from thermal sources fell sharply (-22% ) and wind (-19.1%); slightly increasing the production geothermal (+1.6%). As regards the import-export balance, the change is equal to -17.2% due to a combined effect of the decrease in imports (-12.7%) and the increase in exports (+97.5%).
