(Finance) – Ternathe manager of the national electricity network led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, met in Milan with Lombardy region to present the infrastructural interventions expected in the region from National Electricity Grid Development Plan 2023-2032: 1.3 billion euros of investments over the next ten years. The main innovation introduced by the Development Plan is the network Hypergridwhich will exploit direct current (HVDC) energy transmission technologies to achieve the objectives of transition And safety energy: a new HVDC electric backbone of over 400 km is planned between Milan and Montalto (Viterbo), functional to the integration of renewable capacity.
The project, which will increase the security of energy transfer of Noon towards the regions of Northern Italy characterized by greater demand, provides for a marine stretch from Montalto to Avenza (Massa Carrara), and the modernization with reconversion to 500 kV direct current of existing overhead lines from the area of Avenza towards the south of Lombardy.
Terna’s Plan also provides for new infrastructure for the electricity grid of Olympic and Paralympic Games ‘Milan-Cortina 2026’ which will increase, with works with a reduced landscape impact, electricity reliability in the places where the Winter Olympics will take place. Lombardy will be affected in Valtellina by the new Livigno – Premadio electricity connection, in the province of Sondrio. The infrastructure, under construction, includes a power line of approximately 20 km consisting of two underground cable lines that run almost completely along the same route. The intervention will guarantee greater meshing of the area’s electricity grid and increase the resilience of the electricity system in areas exposed to extreme weather events.
At the same time, in view of the sporting event, the new one is also underway Premadio Electrical Station, designed in compact armored technology with reduced environmental impact; the equipment will be placed inside buildings designed in harmony with the surrounding mountain landscape. The picture is completed by four new underground cable connections (two of which are already in regular operation) serving the electricity grid of the City of Milan.
The company then also planned a major rationalization project of the electricity grid between Average Valtellina and the Valchiavenna. The intervention will make it possible to increase the meshing and, therefore, the efficiency of the electricity grid in the area between the provinces of Sondrio, Bergamo, Lecco and Milan, while promoting the integration of the energy produced by the hydroelectric plants of northern Lombardy. Furthermore, thanks to the vast reorganization plan of the high voltage network, the impact on the territory of existing electricity infrastructures will decrease with environmental and social benefits. The construction of the new 380 kV lines will in fact make it possible to demolish approximately 480 kilometers of lines (over 1,300 pylons) which affect the territory from Valtellina to the gates of Milan.
Among other relevant interventions in Lombardy, the reorganization of the city’s electricity grid Bresciathe rationalization of the electricity grid in Valley Sandand an intervention plan for the resilience of the network in areas exposed to severe meteorological events, due in particular to strong winds and ice.
The company has also committed to underwriting a new Memorandum of Understanding both to renew existing agreements and to promote collaboration and discussion with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the action lines of the Plan.
