Terese Cristiansson on Israel’s attack on Iran

Israel has attacked Iran during the night, including against the country’s weapons factories. Together with the United States, it has been planned for weeks, according to the Pentagon.
– It could be an attempt to calm down the situation, says TV4 Nyheternas Middle East correspondent Terese Cristiansson.

Many experts say the attack is a marker rather than an escalation, do you agree?

– Yes, I do. The attack is the least escalating response Israel has been able to give. The plan for the attack has changed all the time, perhaps not least with the thought of the pressure from the US which has urged to avoid an escalation.

How extensive is this attack?

– We still have no official information, but unofficial information claims that nothing has been hit on the ground, but everything was shot down with anti-aircraft systems. At the same time, there are images of powerful explosions. It is important to take information with a grain of salt for the time being. Both countries want to emerge victorious in this chapter.

How do you view the attack?

– Despite the fact that this attack is more intense than the previous attack in April, this attack is seen as reasonably controlled. It may be an attempt to defuse the situation but it is hard to tell completely until Iran’s leaders have spoken.
