The atmosphere is tense at the US border with Mexico as new border regulations take effect today. Tens of thousands of people have gathered on the Mexican side, prompting the US to send 24,000 police and soldiers there.
The background is the abolition of a law called “Title 42” which was put into use during the corona pandemic and has meant that border staff were able to reject people due to the spread of infection.
Today, the law is replaced by “Title 8”, which provides greater opportunities for migrants who claim grounds for asylum to have these investigated.
