Of the girls and women living in Sweden, 68,000 may have been subjected to genital mutilation, according to the National Board of Health and Welfare. This is according to the National Board of Health and Welfare’s new estimate, which is based on the number of foreign-born women and girls from countries where genital mutilation occurs.

The figures are approximate and account has also been taken of how large the incidence is estimated to be in the countries in question.

“Care and social services play important roles when it comes to offering care and support to women who have been subjected to female genital mutilation as well as preventing girls from being exposed, by spreading knowledge and addressing the issues in dialogue,” the National Board of Health and Welfare states in a press release.

Female genital mutilation is prohibited by law in Sweden. For people who live in Sweden, it is also illegal to go abroad and carry out the procedure.
