Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka made it all the way to the final without losing a single set during the tournament.
Once everything was settled, she also came clean.
– It was probably not the best tennis that I can play, but I am reaching that level. Hopefully I can reach new heights at the US Open, says Sabalenka after the match according to AP.
For in the final against Jessica Pegula at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati now completed days before the grand slam tournament (which starts on August 26), it took Sabalenka 17 minutes to reach a 4–1 lead in the first set. The American accounted for five double faults. The first set ended 6–3, but it was more even in the second set.
The world number six broke Sabalenka’s serve and took the set at 5–5. There, however, the latter showed strength and rounded off the match to 7–5.
So how will she celebrate?
– I’m going to treat myself to a tequila, with a margarita.
The 26-year-old is now, along with Iga Swiatek, the only one to win ten or more WTA titles since 2020.
