Tennis star Mikael Ymer suspended from all tennis for 18 months – says himself: “Unfair”

Mikael Ymer is suspended from all tennis for 18 months.
He announces this himself on Twitter.
“It is unfair,” he writes.

Mikael Ymer beat a top 10-ranked player at Wimbledon earlier in the month for the first time in his career. It was a big step forward for the Swedish star, who has climbed enormously in the world rankings this year. But now comes a huge setback.

Hard punishment

On his Twitter, Ymer announces that he is suspended for 18(!) months from all professional tennis, after violating anti-doping rules. Ymer writes that in January of last year he was informed that he had missed three doping tests during a twelve-month period, which is against the ITF’s anti-doping rules.

He is said to have appealed the decision and also been acquitted by an independent jury. But the ITF, the international tennis federation, appealed the jury’s verdict and was right. It now leads to an 18-month ban from professional tennis.

“This despite the fact that I have never used, or been accused of, using illegal substances,” writes Ymer.

“Unfair”

Ymer writes that he is disappointed by the news, and that the third doping violation should not count.

“As I have already been cleansed, and that I wholeheartedly stand by the fact that a third violation occurred, I consider their decision to be unfair. In addition, I find it difficult to accept that 18 months is a fair punishment,” he writes.

Ymer continues to write.

“I understand that the rules exist to value the integrity of our sport, and that they exist for a reason. But I believe that I have not broken the rules, and my conscience is clear with God as my witness”.

In January 2022, the ITF charged me with a potential anti-doping rule violation for having 3 missed out of competition test attempts in a 12-month period. I fought that charge at a hearing, and was cleared by an independent tribunal of 3 arbitrators in June of 2022. The ITF…
