It is intended that Nick Kyrgios will play the Davis Cup for the first time since 2019 when Sweden hosts Australia at the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm January 31 to February 1.
But first, the injury-plagued Kyrgios, who has not played regularly on the ATP tour since October 2022, hopes to be able to participate in the Australian Open at home in Melbourne, which begins on Sunday.
– I still have five days to go and have a couple of training sessions planned and I will do everything I can. It’s not that serious, so I’ll just take it day by day, says Kyrgios to the Australian television company 7News.
“I feel comfortable”
For the Davis Cup match, Swedish national team captain Simon Aspelin is keeping a place open for Mikael Ymer, who can resume competitive play on January 17 following his 18-month doping ban.
– It will obviously be an adjustment for him to go from a long competitive break to starting to play real matches again. However, he has played at the highest level for many years and I feel comfortable that he will play at a high level, says Simon Aspelin.
