Tennis profile Peter Lundgren dead – he was 59 years old

Swedish sports are in mourning.
Today it was announced that tennis pro Peter Lundgren has died.
He lived to be 59 years old.

It was during the 1980s that Peter Lundgren celebrated greatest success on the tennis court, along with Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg. Lundgren won three ATP titles and was at best 25th in the world ranking.

But now the terrible news has come that Peter has passed away. He lived to be 59 years old.

The son confirms the death and opens up about the grief on Facebook.
“Rest in peace Dad. One of the main ones has unfortunately left us far too soon. A coach, player, friend and father. An inspiration and helping hand for many, both on and off the track. The impression you made and the memories will always live on,” he writes according to Expressen.

Coached Federer

After the active playing career, Lundgren became a very successful tennis coach. He moved to Switzerland and became a coach for a young Roger Federerwho would become one of the sport’s biggest giants.

Peter Lundgren was Federer’s coach for four years and together they won the Swiss’s first Wimbledon title in 2003. After that, the Swede has been a tennis coach for many years abroad and only in 2020 did he move home to Sweden and Sundsvall.

The last period of his life was tough for Peter who, due to his diabetes, lacked sensation in his feet and at the end he was forced to amputate one of his feet.
– So it was a shock. Most people can probably get used to it. It was heavy. But I pretty quickly decided to do it. There was nothing to talk about. The doctor said I would never be able to walk on my foot, and if the infection spread I would have to amputate the whole leg, I didn’t want that, Lundgren told the evening newspaper at the time.
