In the second set, the first break of the match came when Medvedev broke Sinner’s serve to make it 2-1 in the game. The Italian tried to break back, but Medvedev played well and held on to win the second set 6-4.
Left the center court
The third set started the same way. Medvedev started strongly and broke Sinner’s serve to make it 2-1 in the third set. After this, there was an interruption in the match when Jannik Sinner called for his physio.
He sat courtside for a few minutes with his team before leaving center court. Medvedev had to sit back and await word on his opponent.
Eleven minutes after the last point, Sinner came back to center court and got ready to play again.
New tiebreaker
The match started again, was still even and for the first time Sinner managed to break the Russian’s serve, this when he broke to 5-5. The third set also went to a tiebreak where Medvedev was the strongest and won 7-6 (7-4).
In the fourth set, it was Sinner’s turn to take the third game of the set to 2-1 when he broke the Russian’s serve. For the first time in the match, Medvedev seemed to lose focus and let Sinner up to 4-1, who eventually won the fourth set 6-2.
Medvedev strongest
In the fifth and deciding set, the Russian was the first to break his opponent’s serve, this when he went up to 3-1.
The fifth game of the set was long and the advantage oscillated between the combatants before Medvedev finally held serve up to 4-1.
Sinner didn’t manage to come back after that, but Medvedev took the fifth set 6-3 and the match 3-2 in sets. Thus, it stopped at five straight victories for the Italian between these two.
– I knew it would be a tough match if I were to defeat Jannik here today. He played better after the break and I’m glad I was able to maintain a high level. I am very happy about this victory and am now looking forward, says Medvedev in Eurosport’s broadcast after the victory.
The match took almost four hours to complete.
