Jasmine Paolini made Italian tennis history.

Jasmine Paolini became the first Italian in history to reach the Wimbledon women’s singles final on Thursday. The 28-year-old Paolini beat the Croatian in the semifinals By Donna Vekic 2–6, 6–4, 7–6 (10–8).

The match, which ended with an Italian party, was the longest women’s singles semifinal played at Wimbledon.

– I will remember this match for the rest of my life, Paolini said after the match.

Vekic won the first set of the match 6–2 and led the third set 3–1 and 4–3. However, the Croatian missed out on a place in the finals when the decisive set ended in a tiebreaker, which Paolini won 10–8.

Paolini is having a real breakthrough season, because in June at the French Open he played in the final match of a prestigious tournament for the first time Iga Swiateki against.

Before this season, he had never reached beyond the second round in grand slam tournaments and had not won a single main series match at Wimbledon.

This year’s statistics speak a completely different language, as Paolini has suffered only two set defeats at Wimbledon on the way to the final.
