World No. 1 Jannik Sinner got off to a flying start in the semifinals of the French Open and went up 4-0 in the game. He then won the first set 6-2.
But Carlos Alcaraz worked his way into the match and won the second set 6-3.
The third set was a really even battle that went back and forth. Sinner went up 4-2 in the game via a nice backhand that set the Spaniard up. The Italian then switched gears and won the third set 6-3.
The world number three clinched the fourth set and it became a final deciding set.
– The toughest matches I have played in my short career have been against Jannik. US Open 2022 and then this match. It shows what a great player Jannik is, says Alcaraz.
Four hour long match
In the deciding set, Alcaraz, who had grown into the match, was in a shoal and it looked like it would be a quick final set.
But Sinner was not going to be defeated so easily. The Spaniard had the opportunity to decide several times, but Sinner held on. In the end, however, Alcaraz won the last set 6-3. He won with the numbers 3-2 (2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3).
– You have to find joy in suffering, that’s the key. A four-hour long match and five sets, you have to fight and suffer, says Alcaraz after the match in Max.
The 21-year-old will now play his first French Open final, he will face Casper Ruud or Alexander Zverev in the final.
