Tenants are the losers in 2025 – Anna: “You’ll be shocked”

In Sweden, there are currently around 1.5 million rental apartments. The number who live in a rental apartment is roughly twice that, 3 million.

Anna Wahlsberg is one of those who live in a tenement. She belongs to the group that Swedbank’s private economist points out as losers in 2025.

– This is because the rents will probably increase by around 5 percent at the same time that very few will receive a salary increase corresponding to such a rent increase, says Arturo Arques, who is a private economist at Swedbank.

Lagging inflation

The question is how worried the tenants will be going forward. Rent increases are expected to be around 5 percent this year, and were 5 percent last year as well. According to the housing market parties, the high rent increases are primarily a lag of the inflationary shock in the Swedish economy.

– In the long term, it is safer to live in a rental property than to live in owned accommodation. It is more stable and predictable housing costs, says Erik Elmgren, head of the union at the Tenants’ Association.
