An extreme stench spread from an apartment in Rosengård, Malmö.
According to the property owner, the apartment was “neglected and totally uninhabitable.”
Now the 69-year-old tenant, who was evicted, has to pay close to a hundred thousand, writes Hem och Hyra.
The stench haunted the stairwell for years. And a year and a half ago, the man, who lived in the apartment for over 30 years, was thrown out, after a trial in the Svea Court of Appeal.
Now it is clear that he is also forced to pay for the neglect, after a default judgment in Malmö district courtwrites Hem och Hyra. The bill lands at SEK 87,985 for the neglect, plus just over SEK 9,000 to cover the host’s costs for pursuing the case in court.
Cooked in the bathroom
During the time the 69-year-old was staying, the landlord was unable to carry out an inspection, as the man refused to cooperate. When the landlord finally got access to the two-room apartment after the man was forced to leave, the assessment was that the apartment was “neglected and totally uninhabitable.”
Neighbors of the man have testified that at times it was not possible to be in the stairwell because of the stench.
The cause of the stench was, among other things, that the 69-year-old was cooking in his bathroom. The background to that was, according to him himself, that the refrigerator had broken and that he had no running water in the kitchen.
Blaming the neighbors
The 69-year-old has also claimed that he is not responsible for the smell, but that it is due to the landlord not cleaning areas such as the stairwell and the laundry room. He has also blamed the neighbours’ garbage collection.
